Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Don’t let excessive under arm sweating knock your confidence

What is Hyperhidrosis Treatment?

Sweating is a normal body process, which allows the body to cool, however for some this can be quite excessive, impacting on their confidence and self-esteem. Sweating can be seen as excessive when it causes ‘social or personal embarrassment, withdrawal and/or avoidance behaviour, according to Lyall Gorenstien, (Director of surgery at the Columbia University Hyperhidrosis Centre).

If excessive underarm sweating is of a concern its likely you have tried a number deodorants and antiperspirants, you may have even consulted your GP who has diagnosed axillary (armpit) hyperhidrosis. There are a number of factors that may cause excessive sweating that your GP will rule out first, such as Diabetes, thyroid problems, menopause, infection, nervous system disorders and so on. It may even be a side effect of a prescribed medication or simply hereditary. If no underlying cause has been determined then treatment with Botulinum Toxin can be very effective treatment, allowing you to regain your confidence and life your life to the full.

FAQs

You’ve probably got some questions, but before you get in touch, we’ve answered the most common ones.

  • How does the treatment work?

Treatment with botulinum toxin can be very effective for reducing axillary hyperhidrosis. Sweat glands are activated by messages from the body’s nervous system, for some people the nerves that stimulate the sweat gland is overactive resulting in excessive sweating. When Botulinum Toxin is administered into the area this blocks the chemical messenger, which is neurotransmitter called acetylcholine from binding to the sweat gland, which inhibits the release of sweat by effectively paralysing the overactive nerve.

Effects start to work within 2-3 days and maximum results are achieved at day 30. You will find following the months after treatment your sweating will start to gradually return. You do not have to wait until it has completely returned to have your next treatment, we would always advised no sooner than 12 weeks but after this period would be ok.

Your skin will then be cleansed post treatment, your post treatment care will be discussed and your review appointment will be scheduled.
