Anti wrinkle Injections

Soften lines and wrinkles created by facial expressions

What are Anti wrinkle Injections?

Throughout the natural ageing process as our skin loses its collagen elasticity, the effects of continued muscle contraction lead to the development of lines and wrinkles. Facial expressions such as squinting, frowning and raising the eye brows creates a muscle movement that causes the skin to crease and wrinkle. Repeated action of this over many years along side other factors such as sun exposure and life’s style further contribute to the development of expression lines that eventually become static in nature even when we are not contracting the muscle, these are commonly known as crow’s feet, frown and furrow lines.

A botulinum toxin treatment aims to reduce the muscle movement, reducing the lines and wrinkles associated with it. Botulinum toxin is a purified protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Botulinum toxin is a prescription medication and that is very safe and an effective treatment used for a number of medical and cosmetic indications. Botox is the brand name for Botulinum Toxin manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Allergan. As they were one of the first brands that came to market, everyone has come to know the muscle relaxing injection as Botox, however in effect, this is incorrect. There are several muscle relaxing formulations on the market. The drug administered is Botulinum Toxin Type-A. For those who have had muscle relaxing injections in the past, they are likely to have had Botox, Azzalure or Bocouture used for treatment.

You’ve probably got some questions, but before you get in touch, we’ve answered the most common ones.

  • Your Consultation

At Staffordshire Skin and Laser Clinic, we know that your skin is your most important asset. That’s why we give it the attention it deserves. When you come in for a consultation we want you to feel comfortable and relaxed so that we can get a good understanding of your treatment goals and expectations. We will do a full medical assessment to make sure there are no contraindications to treatment, your safety is our number one priority. We will do a full holistic assessment of your concerns, assessing factors such as genetics and lifestyle, followed by an assessment of the lines and wrinkles created by muscle expression. We will assess the skin quality and firmness and if the lines remain static whilst the muscle is not contracting and advise treatment to give the greatest natural aesthetic result. A muscle relaxing treatment may be advised in combination with other treatments for optimal results. During your consultation we will discuss the benefits, potential side effects, risks, treatment alternatives and answer any questions you may have. As we are passionate about results we will also advise on a ZO Skin Rejuvenating protocol as well and nutritional support to allow for optimal results. Following your consultation we will provide you treatment information and a quote.

  • How does the treatment work?

Treatment with botulinum toxin can be very effective for reducing lines and wrinkles created by muscle contraction. When Botulinum Toxin is administered into the area this blocks the chemical messenger, which is neurotransmitter called acetylcholine from stimulating the muscle to contract, this inhibits the movement, therefore reducing the lines and wrinkles that are affected by the muscle contraction, giving the skin a much smoother line free appearance. With repeated treatments and muscle weakening, the lines and wrinkles are no longer able to progressively deepen with age, therefore treatment can also be seen as a preventive step to ageing well. If the lines are already deep in the skin prior to treatment then a dermal filler may be also recommended for optimal results.

  • Pre treatment guidelines

One of the main concerns with injectable treatment is the risk of bruising and swelling. Here are a few pre-treatment tips to help minimise these reactions:

    • 1 week prior to treatment avoid over the counter blood thinning medications aspirin and NSAI’s such as ibuprofen. Do not discontinue any prescribed blood thinning medication without consulting your GP
    • For 1 week prior to treatment avoid omega supplements/fish oils, St John’s Wort, Gingko biloba, Vitamin E, ginseng and primrose oil supplements.
    • 5 Days prior to treatment start taking Arnica supplements as this herbal remedy can reduce swelling and speed up recovery time.
    • For 2 days prior to treatment avoid any products that may cause skin sensitivity such as Tretinoin/Retinols/ Glycolic acid or topical prescriptions
    • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to treatment
  • What to expect during treatment

Prior to treatment you will have the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have, and once completely satisfied this is the right treatment for you a consent form will be signed. All make up will be removed and the skin cleaned. Photographs of the treatment area are taken to enable us to review the effectiveness of treatment and a topical anaesthetic cream will be applied. If there are any active skin infections, cold sores or you are generally unwell treatment will not be administered and will be rescheduled for a later date. If you feel that you need to discuss any illnesses or medications we ask you to contact the clinic prior to your appointment. It is important you tell your practitioner about any medicines or dietary supplements you are taking, some medicines can adversely affect the way the toxin works or increase your risk of bruising.
