What is Thigh Fat?

Thigh fat is the accumulation of fatty deposits within the inner and outer thigh. As well as lifestyle contributions such as poor diet and lack of exercise, hormones can also be responsible for driving the disposition of fat with in the area particularly for women. Others may have a higher predisposition to storing fat in this area due to genetics.

  • What causes thigh fat?

    Thigh fat can develop due to a number of factors including genetics, poor diet, lack of exercise, and hormones. Our genetics and fat cell distribution can mean we are more likely to store fat in the thighs over other body areas. A diet that is high in sugar, fat and processed foods can also contribute to weight gain in this area alongside a lack of physical activity. Another culprit may be your hormonal changes or imbalances during periods such as puberty, pregnancy and menopause. One of the main culprit for weight gain on your thighs is the hormone oestrogen. This hormones drives increase in fat cells to the thigh and buttocks and influences body fat distribution and is sex specific for women.

  • What can I do to lose thigh fat?

    There are a number of measures that can be taken for overall weight loss which will have a positive impact on your concern area, these will include regular exercise and a balanced diet.

    1. Cardiovascular exercises – Exercises such as running, cycling or a brisk walk will help to raise your heart rate and burn up stored calories. It is advised that you should do around 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise on most days or at least 150 minutes per week.
    2. Strength training – By incorporating exercises that target your leg muscles, this will help to build tone in the area and reduce the fat. Building muscle in this area will also help to increase your metabolism which in turn will burn more fat. Exercise such as squats, lunges, leg presses and dead lifts will all be beneficial.
    3. Eat a balanced diet – In order to promote weight loss a calorie deficient diet will be required. Consuming nutrient dense, high protein foods while avoiding sugary, processed foods are key. Try and increase your intake of lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats.
    4. Keep hydrated – good hydration is key to weight loss as this will help to control hunger, having a positive impact on reducing your calorie consumption while supporting all other bodily functions for optimal health and wellbeing.

  • Will thigh fat return following treatment?

    When we lose weight through diet and exercise the volume in the fat cells decrease but the number of fat cells will always remain the same, meaning they have the potential to refill during periods of weight gain.
