What are Blackheads?

Blackheads are a type of mild non inflammatory acne and appear as small bumps on the skin. They are called blackheads as the surface of the bump opens it looks black or dark, this is due to exposure of the air causing it to appear black. When the bump remains closed and is not exposed to air it remains white – and is therefore called a whitehead.

The most common cause of blackheads is caused by overproduction of the oil gland which can happen during hormonal changes, such as puberty, menstruation and pregnancy. Blackheads can also be formed when hair follicles are irritated or when there is build-up of dead skin cells. Most commonly they affect adolescence but can occur at any age.
