Plasma Pen

What is a Plasma Pen?

As we age natural changes to the skin occur and the production of collagen and elastin reduces, this in turn leads to thinning of the deep dermal layers of the skin, leading to the formation of lines, wrinkles and skin laxity. Other skin concerns occur though trauma and conditions such as acne, that can lead to the formation of scars, in which the deep dermal layers require a collagen remodelling, similar to stretch mark rejuvenation.

The Plasma IQ, was the first FDA class II cleared handheld plasma device. One of the latest advances in aesthetics, this non-invasive procedure Plasma IQ safely uses the scientific process whereby plasma is generated through focused, targeted micro beams to cause subluxation of the tissue stimulating a collagen remodelling through a process known as Fibro blasting. Through the creation of many tiny wounds to the skin, this initiates the body to stimulate a wound healing process stimulating the cells to produce collagen and elastin thus offering many skin rejuvenating benefits. Plasma is a popular treatment for any looking for a non-invasive treatment option to tighten the skin, reduce lines, wrinkles, skin laxity, scars and stretch marks. This treatment device is a popular non-surgical alternative to upper and lower skin tightening eye lid surgery also known as a Blepharoplasty.

  • How does the treatment work?

A plasma pen is a hand held device, which when placed over the skin produces a plasma arc as the pen transforms an electrical energy into a gaseous diatomic nitrogen (N2) and when combined with oxygen a reaction occurs leading to a tiny subluxation of the tissue to create a controlled injury in the upper layers of the skin (the epidermis). This causes an immediate contraction of the skin, while the heat energy causes a thermal disruption in the deep dermal layers. This thermal disruption stimulates fibroblast activity leading to the production of collagen and elastic resulting in a number of skin rejuvenating benefits such as skin tightening, softening lines and wrinkles, rejuvenating scars and stretch marks and many more. Due to the fibroblast stimulation the way this treatment works is known as ‘fibroblasting’.

  • Treatment safety and side effects

Firstly you are in safe hands by visiting our Safe Face accredited centre of excellence. Prior to your treatment we will ensure there are no treatment contraindications. Plasma pen treatment is a very safe treatment when performed to correct treatment protocols. When treatments are performed to aggressively this can lead to unwanted scaring, visible holes in the skin and pigment changes. We do not treat darker skin types (Fitzpatrick 4-6) with this treatment due to the risk of pigmentation changes following the procedure.

  • How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments you will require will be determined by your treatment area concern. For most concerns a treatment course is recommended of 3-6 treatments at 6-8 weekly intervals.

  • When will i see results?

You will see an immediate contraction of the skin laxity and plumpness, however this will be due to the initial swelling. When stimulating fibroblast activity for collagen production this generally occurs around 6 weeks and continues to improve for several months following treatment.

  • Am I suitable for treatment?

Prior to any treatment at Staffordshire Skin & Laser Clinic we always carry out a full medical consultation and assessment to ensure that there are no treatment contraindications as your safety is our priority. Most people are suitable for treatment as there only very few contraindications. These include:

    • Fitzpatrick skin type 4-6
    • Pregnancy and breast feeding
    • Active skin infections or acne
    • Open wounds in the treatment area
    • Skin rashes in the treatment area
    • Active cold sores
    • Skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis or pigmentation disorders in the treatment area
    • Skin cancer
    • History of keloid scarring
    • Uncontrolled diabetes
    • Bleeding disorders
    • Certain autoimmune conditions
  • How does treatment feel?

Prior to your practitioner will apply topical anaesthetic to the area to ensure your treatment is a comfortable procedure. You may feel tiny little stings, however this is tolerated very well.

  • How long will results last?

On average the effects of plasma pen results will last around 2-3 years, and some results will even be permanent. This is far longer than other types of cosmetic treatment results at a fraction of the cost.

  • Pre treatment guidelines

If having the upper or lower eye lids, avoid wearing contact lens and eye makeup to your procedure.

  • What to expect after treatment?

Following your plasma pen treatment it is normal to experience swelling and tenderness. The initial recovery process can take a few days to a week so this is a general guide as to what to expect:

    1.  If you have had the upper or lower eye lids treated you will wake up with swelling and puffiness in the area, this will slightly reduce over the day due to the effects gravity and lymphatic drainage. Stretchmarks, scares and wrinkles will also appear swollen. The tiny holes that were created will look pink and sore. You will also experience some pain and discomfort, however this can be effectively managed with pain relief medication and anti-histamines for swelling.
    2. Again with the eyes, you will wake up puffy and swollen, this will reduce throughout the day, there will still be some tenderness to the treatment area.
    3. The swelling should start to substantially subside and tiny micro crusts/scabs will have formed over the tiny holes created, this is a normal part of the healing process, the skin will also feel tight and possibly a little tender still.
    4. Pain and tenderness has usually subsided by now and the swelling resolved or minimal will be remaining.
    5. The swelling should be resolved by now, the tiny scabs will still be visible.
    6. Over the next couple of days the scabs will start to naturally flake off, the skin will appear pink underneath, the area may still feel sensitive, however not painful to touch.

Over the next few weeks the pinkness will start to return to its normal skin colour and the collagen stimulating effects will be taking place deep within the skin leading to the gradual improvement of lines, wrinkles, scars and stretch marks.
