What is Oily Skin?

Oily skin is a result of overactive sebaceous glands that make too much sebum. Sebum is a waxy, oil like substance, it is vital to the normal functioning of healthy skin and helps to remove dead skin cells from the pores, as well as lubricating and protecting the skin . The skin becomes oily when the sebaceous glands overproduce sebum. The skin will appear shinny and the pores enlarged, this may result in blockages within the follicles resulting in a number of skin concerns including acne, blackheads.

You’ve probably got some questions, but before you get in touch, we’ve answered the most common ones here.

  • What causes oily skin?

There are a number of contributing factors to oily skin. Firstly genetics will play a part, if people in your family have oily skin, then you may also be more prone to it. Hormones can be responsible, when these fluctuate during times such puberty, pregnancy, menopause and during periods of stress, there can be an overproduction of sebum leading to oily skin. For some individuals it may just simply be that they have overactive sebaceous oil glands. Skin care products, over cleansing, exfoliation, harsh products, heavy moisturiser can impair the skin’s barrier function and strip away your own natural oils, leading to an increased oil production thus leading to oily skin. There are also certain medications such as androgens and corticosteroids that can also trigger extra sebum production.

  • Will I always have oily skin?

Aside from genetic factors contributing to oil production, other factors can change over time, such as hormones linked to puberty, pregnancy and menopause, stress levels, environmental factors, therefore the skin can change overtime.

  • What treatments are effective for oily skin?

There are a number of treatments that can be very effective for oily skin types, however a daily skin care regimen that focuses on oil control and exfoliation will also be required.

    1. HydraFacial – HydraFacial is an effective treatment for oily skin types . This treatment provides a combination of cleansing, deep exfoliation, extraction, hydration, and antioxidant infusion finished with light therapy to deep clean and rejuvenate the skin. The exfoliation process will help to remove the build-up of sebum while the extraction process will remove clogged sebum and debris from the pores to reduce their appearance whilst rejuvenating the skin.
    2. Chemical Peels – The Blue Peel Radiance and ZO Stimulator peel are effective. This will involve an application of a peel to the ski which will gently exfoliate the upper layer of skin cells, and give a deep clean to the pores helping to remove any sebum an debris, resulting in an overall reduction of oil and the appearance of enlarged pores. Following your consultation your practitioner will advise the best treatment for optimal results. We will ensure you have a good understanding of how the treatment will benefit your skin, including benefits, any downtime expected, duration and costs.
  • Will oily skin return following treatment?

If good skin care practices are not adopted then it is likely that oily skin will return. It is vital to address contributing factors such as stress, hormones, and skin care practices, with genetics been the only one we cannot change. Good skin care practices will involve regular cleansing, exfoliating, using oil free products including makeup, active ingredients such as retinols, glycolic and salicylic acids will also be the key to keeping your complexion oil free.
