What is Oily Skin?

Oily skin is a result of overactive sebaceous glands that make too much sebum. Sebum is a waxy, oil like substance, it is vital to the normal functioning of healthy skin and helps to remove dead skin cells from the pores, as well as lubricating and protecting the skin . The skin becomes oily when the sebaceous glands overproduce sebum. The skin will appear shinny and the pores enlarged, this may result in blockages within the follicles resulting in a number of skin concerns including acne, blackheads.

FAQs

You’ve probably got some questions, but before you get in touch, we’ve answered the most common ones here.

  • What causes oily skin?

There are a number of contributing factors to oily skin. Firstly genetics will play a part, if people in your family have oily skin, then you may also be more prone to it. Hormones can be responsible, when these fluctuate during times such puberty, pregnancy, menopause and during periods of stress, there can be an overproduction of sebum leading to oily skin. For some individuals it may just simply be that they have overactive sebaceous oil glands. Skin care products, over cleansing, exfoliation, harsh products, heavy moisturiser can impair the skin’s barrier function and strip away your own natural oils, leading to an increased oil production thus leading to oily skin. There are also certain medications such as androgens and corticosteroids that can also trigger extra sebum production.

  • Will I always have oily skin?

Aside from genetic factors contributing to oil production, other factors can change over time, such as hormones linked to puberty, pregnancy and menopause, stress levels, environmental factors, therefore the skin can change overtime.
