  • What causes dull skin?

There are a number of factors that can contribute to dull skin, from ageing, lifestyle and environment factors. As the skin ages, the rate at which we exfoliate dead skin cells, also known as the cellular turnover decreases. The reduced exfoliation and build-up of dead skin cells will result in a dull looking complexion. Skin that is dehydrated will also lack lustre, it will appear dry and flaky and may worsen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If there is a poor circulation to the skin, this may be due to general ageing, health or lifestyle factors such as smoking, obesity and stress, this can further contribute to dull skin. Factors such as smoking will damage the blood vessels resulting in reduced blood and oxygen flow to the cells, other factors such as obesity and stress may result in a constricting to the blood vessel, while poor nutrition can affect the health of the blood vessels reducing their ability to deliver blood, nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells.

The use of either exfoliating scrubs or chemical exfoliators such as glycolic or salicylic acids with gently remove dead skin cells, this will improve the skin cell turn over when used regularly to reveal brighter looking skin. Skin hydration and the correct products for your skin type are important, however be careful not to over moisturise as this will lead to poor exfoliation of the skin. As part of your daily skin care regime ensure you incorporate a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. This will further help prevent dull skin and future protect your skin from the signs of premature ageing. Good diet and nutrition is a key element to preventing dull skin, having a well-balanced diet with plenty of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants alongside good hydration is key to optimum skin health. Further lifestyle choices such as quitting smoking, avoiding excessive sun exposure and pollutants, while getting a good 7-9 hours sleep each night and managing stress will all be positive contributing factors.
